14 December 2009

The bingo industry have been campaigning long and hard for a drop in bingo duty and these concerns have been answered with a cut from 22% to 20%. Previously duty was in-line with other forms of gambling at 15% but in April 2009 the Chancellor decided to increase the duty to 22%. Concerns were raised over the decision as the land-based bingo industry were already struggling due to the smoking ban and the move to playing bingo online and the recession.
Figures show that over 100 bingo clubs have gone and another 100 could go due to Aprils tax increase.
Although the tax cut is welcomed by the industry the campaign continues for tax to be set to the same levels as other forms of gambling in the UK.
The announcement of this tax cut shows that the government are willing to listen to the campaigners.
