Gonzo’s Questremains Net Entertainment’s best slot, and is still the one to beat for many of their competitors. Breathing new life into the much-used Amazon rainforest theme, Net have developed this game around some innovative ideas and a great central character:
The eponymous Gonzo – aka Gonzalo Pizarro – was a Spanish conquistador, pillaging his way through large swathes of the Amazon rainforest in the 16th century. Throughout the game he stands at the side of the reels acting as compere, muttering, growling and even breakdancing across the screen when you win, adding an authentic story element that most games lack. The key draw here, though, is the symbol blocks, raining down from above rather than spinning – and when you score a win, all blocks in the line crumble to dust and the blocks above fall into their place.
There are 20 compulsory lines with coin values from 1p up to 50p if your casino permits it - plus 5 bet levels. Matching symbol wins pay from 3 to 2,500 coins, and there’s a wild symbol but no scatter function; wins generated from crumbling blocks, however, are subject to successive multipliers of up to 5.
There are also free spin falls on offer if you line up 3 or more of the sun god symbol, giving you up to 10 falls with multipliers worth up to 15 times. Once this set of falls is over, your total feature win rains down on you in gold coins which Gonzo catches for you in his hat – and a best case scenario here will net you 2,500 times at bet level 5 with a 15 times multiplier, equating to 187,500 coins.
The ancient carvings on the symbols are incredibly stylish and make the poker symbols used on some other jungle-themed games look plain lazy; the sound effects are in a similar league, and you’ll find the gameplay every bit as immersive as the environment. One day someone will make a movie based on a slot game, and if you had to pick one of the current crop of games as inspiration,Gonzo’s Quest would be a shoe-in.
